BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression-Taking for Children

For non-audiologists who have completed the BSA Certificate in Otoscopy and Impression-Taking for adults.

The management of hearing loss from infancy is reliant on children having well-fitting, comfortable ear moulds so that amplification is not constrained by acoustic feedback. Although ear impressions are usually taken by audiologists, there are many situations when it would be appropriate for other trained professionals to take ear mould impressions, for example when an advisory teacher is visiting a family on a regular basis. This reduces delay and disruption for the family who may not have to attend a hospital appointment for new impression and frees up audiology appointments for hearing aid care.

There is a recognition that traditional models are service-provision are evolving new care pathways for the mutual benefit of families, support-professionals and ultimately, the hearing-impaired child. This one-day course has been requested by the BSA education committee to allow training to be given to non-audiologists, in the examination of the ear, using otoscopy, and the taking of impressions for new ear moulds.
