Speech Tests

Speech discrimination testing is an important part of the process of hearing aid evaluation, especially in the fitting of signal processing hearing aids.

Traditionally in the UK there have been a small number of speech tests available, and these may be at the floor or ceiling of a child's word recognition ability. New speech tests are needed to meet a wider range of performance in speech recognition, both in terms of the acoustics of the speech material and the vocabulary-level that a child has.

Information is given on some additional speech recognition materials that have been used in research studies undertaken at Chear.

There are a number of questionnaire scales that have been developed to quantify subjective changes in auditory performance with age, hearing aid conditions or other interventions. We have used the Children’s Hearing Inventory Listening Development (CHILD) in several of our hearing aid studies for children. The CHILD was developed by Karen Anderson and Joseph Smaldino for use with children in the USA and Canada. We have slightly modified the language of the CHILD and Pre-school CHILD for use with UK English speakers, in discussion with Karen Anderson. This version is available for other centres to use, thereby maintaining consistency in the language across different sites in the UK.
